Choir Expecations

 

2016-2017 Choir Expectations

  • Students will meet for two 40 minute rehearsals twice a week.

  • Students will perform at the St. Ignatius Christmas Concert and Spring Concert.

  • Students will perform at least one event at the St. Ignatius Solo/Ensemble Festival on February 18, 2017.

  • Students will meet for two 15 minute small group lessons with Mrs. Westbrook each quarter.

    • Please see section titled "Lesson Grading" for more information.

  • Students will be required to practice for 30 minutes outside of class.

    • Please see the section titled “Practice Journals” for more information. 

  • Students in 5/6 Choir 7/8 Choir will be required to sing for Liturgies that are planned by grades 5-8 unless they are serving for the Mass.

    • Students are expected to dress nicely, professionally, and in a way that shows respect and reverence to God.

  • Students will have a weekly online Music Theory/History assignment worth 5 points.

    • Weekly assignments DO NOT count towards the 30 minute practice requirements.
       

Rehearsal Expectations
Students in Choir are expected to be respectful, responsible, and productive during Choir rehearsals.

  • Treat director and fellow choir members with respect

  • Arrive to rehearsals on time

  • Arrive to class prepared.Students should bring the following to each rehearsal:

    • 1. Choir Folder 2. Pencil (NO PENS!) 3. Daily Planner 4. Choir Music (distributed in rehearsal)

  • Complete and turn in Practice Journals and other assignments on time

  • Be responsible with materials and music that are distributed

    •  If music or materials are lost or damaged, a fine of the value of the lost or damaged item will be charged to purchase a replacement copy.

  • Positive Attitude

  • Stay on task and participate during rehearsals
     

Rehearsal Grading
Grades in Choir will be based on the following criteria:  attitude, participation, growth in music skills and abilities, completion of assignments and practice journals, and attendance at rehearsals, lessons, liturgy choir, concerts, and events.

  • Students will be assessed on implementing the new musical skills they are learning during Choir rehearsals and during their individual lessons. tudent’s music/singing abilities are never compared to other students’ abilities. Their progress is measured by their individual growth in skills and concepts.

  • Students will have homework assigned to be completed online or in writing.

  • Tests or quizzes may be administered on musical terms, music history or other music concepts studied in class.

  • Students will be required to complete 30 minutes of practice outside of rehearsals.

 

Lesson Grading
Lessons allow students to have the opportunity to sing in a small group setting. Lessons give students the opportunity to work on their vocal technique and music skills in a small group setting.

 

  • Students will meet for two 15 minute small group lessons with Mrs. Westbrook each quarter.

  • Students will be responsible for making sure they sign up for a lesson and arrive at their scheduled time.

    • Lesson times will be available during lunch recess on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday and during end of the day study halls on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.  A calendar will be posted in the classroom for sign up and on my website to monitor if/when students signed up for lessons.
      More times will be offered on an as needed basis

  • Each lesson is worth 5 points.

  • Additional lessons or larger sectional rehearsals may be added in an as needed basis because of challenging music or a lack of productivity during large group rehearsals or lessons.

 

Concert and Event Grading

Core subjects have tests. Sports teams have tournaments and championships.Musicians have concerts and performances to demonstrate the skills and concepts that they have been developing.
Choir students are expected to be at all St. Ignatius Concerts and Music Events.
 

  • 25 Points Each - Choir students are required to perform at both the Christmas and Spring concerts

  • 10 Points- Students will participate in at least one event at the St. Ignatius Solo/Ensemble Festival

  • Liturgy Choir: 5 Points - Students will be the Liturgy Choir for Masses planned by grades 5, 6, 7, and 8.
    *A student is exempt from Liturgy Choir if he/she is serving for the Mass.

  • 8th Grade Graduation Liturgy: 10 Points - Students in grades 5-7 are to attend and lead music for the Liturgy.

  • Other events may take place during the school year (Grandparent's Day, Volunteer Appreciation, etc.)

    • If there is a conflict with an out of school day concert or event date, a written note must be received from a parent/guardian stating what the conflict is.  This written notice must be received at least
      two weeks in advance before the concert or event.  Arrangements will be made for the student to complete make up work for a concert or event grade.

    • An unexcused absence from a concert or event will result in a loss of concert/event performance points. No make up points or assignment will be offered.
       

Practice Journals
Individual practice will help students continue to grow as musicians and continue to work on time management outside of Choir Rehearsals.

  • Students will log their weekly practice time using a Practice Journal that they are given during class.

  • The Practice Journals will be due on Monday before the start of rehearsal.

  • Students will need to have the journal completed on time with a parent signature in order to receive credit.

    • Practice Journal grading is as follows: 
      30 minutes = 5 points
      25-29 minutes = 4 points
      20-24 minutes = 3 points
      15-19 minutes = 2 points
      10-14 minutes = 1 point
      9 minutes and below = 0 points

  • Procedure for Practice Journals turned in late: If the full 30 minutes is completed, journals turned in on Tuesday will be worth 4 points; Journals turned in Wednesday or Thursday morning before Liturgy will be worth 3 points; Journals turned in after Liturgy until the end of the day Thursday are 2 points. Practice Journals will receive a score of 0 points if not turned in before the end of the day on Thursdays.
